Drupal - Node edit permissions quirk

For anyone having the time to code a kind of module that will include all these quirks, here it goes one that happens in Drupal very often.

Granted a role the ability to edit certain nodes, when the user log in and try to edit a page, either there's no edit tab, or the user simply can't edit the node.

If you've tried everything else (chances are you arrived here because of that, you need to grant that role permission to use whichever input type you've set for that node or set of nodes. To do so:

  1. Edit your node and check what input type it is set to use
  2. Go to Site Configuration > Input Formats and then make sure that the corresponding input type is configured to allow the role to use that type.

Sometimes a node will get set to use "Full HTML," and, in doing so, most roles are prevented from being able to edit a node that has that type assigned.

Cheers!

Imagecache for custom modules

Here's something found somewhere long time ago and I'm just reproducing here. On a project we needed to find a way to trigger an imagecache preset from a custom module. We came up with:

 <?php
function yourmodule_imagecache_generate($preset$file_path) {

Gartner puts Drupal in visionaries quadrant

In this year's report by Gartner, which was released the end of last month, Drupal was promoted to the 'visionaries' category right next to Google and other big players.  According to Gartner, visionaries align with Gartner's view of how a market will evolve, but they have yet to deliver against that vision.

Why does this matter? As most of you know, there are hundreds of web content management systems and not everyone has the time or skill sets to figure out what system to use. Plus, large organizations that are about to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a website project, don't want to make the wrong technology choice. Instead, those large businesses call Gartner, or any of the other analyst firms, to get advice on what technologies to adopt.

You might notice that neither Joomla! nor Wordpress are to be found on this graph.

Drupal, register_globals and a tip

 I recently installed Drupal on my development site. My webhost had register_globals turned on and Drupal requires them to be off. I read through the Drupal user forum and came across two methods to manually override this issue: Updated 2010.01.01
